Held on June 29, 1958 between Brazil and host country Sweden, this match secured Pele's rise from teenage phenom to cultural icon. Pele scored two goals in the 5-2 victory, including what is widely considered to be one of the greatest World Cup goals of all time: with a 2-1 lead ten minutes into the second half, Pele took control of the ball inside the penalty area, chipped the ball over the defender then smashed it past a helpless Kalle Svensson. This marked Brazil's first World Cup victory, and also marked the first time a World Cup held in Europe was not won by a European team.
